Mavs Stumble In Playoffs

Won 44, lost 38 (third, Midwest)…Dallas became just the 10th team in league history to improve upon its record in at least four straight seasons…it was a “streakless” year – the longest winning streak was four straight and the longest losing streak was three in a row…for the third straight year, the Mavericks made the fewest turnovers in the NBA, this time with a then-NBA record low of 14.4 per game…Sam Perkins made the All-Rookie Team…Dallas was 30-1 when outshooting the opponent…Dallas was the NBA’s healthiest team, losing only six player-games to injury…the Mavericks carried just 11 players for most of the season…after going 31-10 at home the previous season, Dallas was 24-17 in 1984-85…11 of those losses were by 10 or more points…Dallas became the first team to have four players make at least 20 3-pointers (Brad Davis, Dale Ellis, Mark Aguirre and Derek Harper.)

Playoffs

FIRST ROUND VS. PORTLAND
GAME ONE (APRIL 18, 1985) @ REUNION ARENA (17,007) — DALLAS 139, PORTLAND 131 (2 OT). Rolando Blackman breaks Dallas’ single-game playoff scoring record with 43 points as Dallas takes a 1-0 lead in the series with a 139-131 win in double overtime. The Blazers seemingly have the game won (they hold a two-point lead with 17 seconds remaining and possession of the ball), but an errant pass by Mychal Thompson allows Blackman to hit a 13-foot jumper with six seconds remaining in the first overtime. The Mavericks take control in the second overtime, as Blackman scores seven points. Portland takes its largest lead of the game, 53-38, with 2:35 to play in the first half, but the Mavericks retake the lead (88-85) entering the fourth period after an explosive 40-point third period which is highlighted by 12 points by Mark Aguirre. Following a 27-18 fourth period run, Portland takes a two-point lead with 10 seconds remaining in regulation. Blackman, however, hits a four-foot jumper in the lane with four seconds remaining to knot the score at 112 and send the game into overtime.

GAME TWO (APRIL 20, 1985) @ REUNION ARENA (17,007) — PORTLAND 124, DALLAS 121 (OT). The Blazers make up a 10-point deficit in the final 2:06 of regulation to force overtime en route to a 124-121 victory which ties the series, 1-1. Clyde Drexler, who watches Rolando Blackman go for his second-straight outing of 40-plus points in the playoffs (Blackman finishes with 41 points), gets revenge by drawing Sam Perkins away from the basket and then hitting a wide-open Mychal Thompson for a layin with one second remaining in regulation, which knots the score at 110 and forces overtime. Portland takes control in the extra period, as the Blazers gain a split in Reunion Arena. Portland outboards Dallas, 62-38.

GAME THREE (APRIL 23, 1985) @ PORTLAND MEMORIAL COLISEUM (12,666) — PORTLAND 122, DALLAS 109. Kiki Vandeweghe’s 10 points down the stretch leads a 22-9 Portland run which breaks open a tight game, and gives the Blazers a 122-109 win and a 2-1 advantage in the series. The Mavericks hold their largest lead, 70-61, with 9:09 to play in the third period, but the Blazers storm back, going on a 30-17 run to take a 91-87 lead entering the fourth period. Once again Portland’s victory is keyed by board work — the Blazers outrebound the Mavericks, 51-39. Sam Bowie (11 rebounds) and Clyde Drexler (10 rebounds) lead the Blazers. Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguirre each score 30 points in the losing effort. Vandeweghe scores 24 points to lead the Blazers.

GAME FOUR (APRIL 25, 1985) @ PORTLAND MEMORIAL COLISEUM (12,666) — PORTLAND 115, DALLAS 113. Seldom-used Blazers reserve Audie Norris finishes off the Mavericks with a 10-foot baseline jumper with one second remaining, giving the Blazers a series-clinching 115-113 win. Norris, who had just six points in the previous three games combined, also hits a key shot with 22 seconds remaining to put the Blazers up 113-111. Norris ends the game with nine points in 17 minutes off the bench. Dale Ellis makes his first start in the playoffs, replacing Jay Vincent, who is mired in a shooting slump. Mark Aguirre leads Dallas with 39 points, 24 of which come in the first half. Rolando Blackman, who has carried the Mavericks for most of the series, shoots only two-of-13 from the floor, but still manages 17 points.
