FIRST ROUND VS. PORTLAND

GAME ONE (APRIL 26, 1990) @ PORTLAND MEMORIAL COLISEUM (12,884) — PORTLAND 109, DALLAS 102. The Blazers open their best-of-five series against the Mavericks with a 109-102 win. The Mavericks are within two, 91-89, with 4:28 to play after Derek Harper, who leads Dallas with 24 points, connects on a three-pointer. Thirty seconds later Jerome Kersey hits an 18-footer, beginning a run of nine unanswered points (five by Kevin Duckworth) which allows Portland to build its lead to 100-89 with 1:14 to play. The Mavericks are able to stay close despite Portland outrebounding them 47-33, including 20-8 on the defensive glass. The Mavericks, who are already without Brad Davis (pulled right hamstring) and Adrian Dantley (fractured right leg), are hampered even further when Rolando Blackman and Roy Tarpley each pick up three first half fouls. Tarpley leads Dallas on the boards with 14 rebounds while adding 22 points and a club playoff record-tying five blocked shots. Portland is led by Terry Porter’s 28 points and Buck Williams’ 16 rebounds. The game marks the first time the Mavericks have ever opened a first-round series on the road and is the first time Dallas ever lost Game One in the first round.
GAME TWO (APRIL 28, 1990) @ PORTLAND MEMORIAL COLISEUM (12,884) — PORTLAND 114, DALLAS 107. For the first time in their playoff history, the Mavericks fall behind 2-0 in the first round, losing to the Blazers, 114-107. The Mavericks jump out to a 15-point lead, 38-23, late in the first period, but reserve guards Drazen Petrovic and Danny Young get the Blazers back into the game by combining for 20-straight Portland points and 22 of the Blazers’ first 24 second period points. Petrovic scores nine of Portland’s first 11 points in the second period and finishes with 14 points on the night. In the fourth period, Blazers center Kevin Duckworth, whose 18 points leads seven Blazers in double-figures, scores 12 points on six-of-seven shooting as Portland takes a 90-83 advantage. Derek Harper and Rolando Blackman combine for 37 points in the first half, but manage only four in the fourth period. Harper scores two of his team-high 23 points in the second half. The Mavericks allow the Blazers just five offensive rebounds in the second half, after allowing 16 in the first half, but Portland still scores 35 second-chance points in the game. Roy Tarpley leads Dallas with 17 rebounds while also adding 22 points in a club playoff record 48 minutes. The Blazers are led on the boards by Buck Williams’ 13 rebounds.
GAME THREE (MAY 1, 1990) @ REUNION ARENA (17,007) — PORTLAND 106, DALLAS 92. The Mavericks are swept for the first time in their playoff history as the Blazers win, 106-92. Roy Tarpley plays 42 minutes, but misses 10-of-12 shots and six-of-eight free throws and turns the ball over five times. Tarpley, bothered by an upset stomach, finishes with six points and 15 rebounds. Buck Williams misses the final three periods after catching an inadvertent elbow from James Donaldson. Williams suffers cuts above and below his right eye and is taken to Baylor Medical Center with blurred vision. The Blazers are further crippled when Kevin Duckworth has to leave after suffering a broken right hand with two minutes left in the third period. Still, the Mavericks cannot overcome Jerome Kersey (29 points), Clyde Drexler (20 points, 10 assists) and Terry Porter (20 points, nine assists). Dallas is led by Rolando Blackman’s 23 points.
